MerMay and a Lot of Mermaid Art

Featured image for the blog post MerMay and a Lot of Mermaid Art

If you’ve been reading this blog for more than five minutes, you probably noticed that I’ve made a lot of mermaid art, especially when I was younger. Shoot, I wanted to be a mermaid as a kid. I suppose that makes sense; we had a swimming pool growing up and The Little Mermaid hit theaters. Obviously, I paddled around the shallow end, wearing my buoyant yellow swimmies and envisioning myself radiant like Daryl Hannah in Splash.

Naturally, then, mermaids showed up on an especially frequent basis in my drawings when I was a kid. Mermaids going on dates, mermaids showering, mermaids wielding weapons [1] [2]—nothing’s off the table when it comes to this source of endless inspiration.

Thus, the annual MerMay art event naturally appeals to me. I mean, making mermaids for a month straight? Sold! In 2020, I even created my own MerMay prompts to challenge myself.

As usual, I experimented with different styles and colors, and I even threw in some analog mermaid art as well. Behold, the 2020 collection:

“Pearl” is my favorite of the bunch; it aligns most closely with the mid-century vibe I’ve been leaning toward these days. That’s why I’ve gone back to redo some of these 2020 MerMay-dens in that style. Take a peek, why dontcha!
