From the mid ‘80s to the early ‘90s (and far, far beyond), the artistic endeavors of my young self usually involved royalty, mermaids with long flowing hair and fuchsia lips, and pink star rings. (“What is a pink star ring?” you might wonder, and the answer is a ring with a pink star on in. I’m pretty sure I never saw one in real life, but that didn’t stop me from being obsessed with their majesty.)
Other sources of inspiration included
- The Little Mermaid and other various Disney animations
- Barbie and the Rockers
- Hollywood
- Jewelry (i.e., pink star rings!!!!!)
- My first-grade teacher named Mrs. Schuller
- Things that sparkle, shine, or glitter
- Scratch ‘n’ sniff stickers
- The color pink (such as that seen in, oh, say, pink star rings)
- Fairy tales
- Crayons
- Magic
- Blank notebooks
- Fame and fortune
- Happy endings and true love
Here’s further evidence revealing that I’m basically still the same person I was when I was five to ten years old:
When I was in kindergarten, I liked to write, color, draw, do work, sing songs, eat snacks, and go home. —June 7, 1993
THIS IS STRAIGHT-UP MY EVERY DAY. Am I living my best life?
At any rate, feast thine eyes on this Crayola-colored gallery of artwork I made when I was a little kid. Feel free to “ooh” and “ahh” during this traipse back in time as you pay witness to the early years of HappiMess, a.k.a., the Time When There Was No HappiMess. Touching the artwork is encouraged. (This especially makes sense if you’re looking at this on a tablet or smartphone.)
