Florrible: When Flora Goes to Seed

There are really so many photos you can take of beautiful flowers. Unpopular opinion there? For sure I’ve halted in my tracks upon seeing an I-can’t-believe-this-isn’t-fake passionflower and had to take a picture. But like many images that wind up on Instagram, flower pics tend to lose their specialness. What do I do with all these photos to make them less like everyone else’s pics of the same flora and more like something I’d want to look at again?

The solution: Rudeness!

What To Do With All Those Photos of Flowers

The idea for the Florrible series (then tentatively titled Conversations with Nature according to old Patreon posts) came about when I reviewed photos I’d taken when tromping through a forest of fallen redwoods in southern Oregon. I didn’t know what to do with the less interesting images, yet it seemed a shame to just delete them. (I don’t like to get rid of anything I create!) So I made a perhaps controversial decision to turn them into single-panel photo comics and give them silly, terrible things to say.

Here’s the first Florrible comic, featuring trees in the Alfred Loeb State Park:

If a tree gets lost in the woods… I don’t know where I’m going with this

I then decided to apply this methodology to my other photos of flowers and bits of nature. Adding speech bubbles featuring bratty, ridiculous text is how I differentiate my flower photos from all the other nature photography that’s out there. After all, there’s just something about a delicate flower announcing it needs to use the toilet, yeah?
