I super love Pictionary (and an online version of such magic known as iSketch, which Pine Cone and I would play on the XXX setting for hours, drawing things like “bum bandit,” “vertical bacon sandwich,” and “whack your Magic Johnson” in the cutest ways possible). I like that the game involves creativity, and even if you don’t think you’re creative, the time limit forces you to be: you have to result to any means necessary to communicate the message to others in the best way you see fit. This results in HIL-AR-IT-Y!
The cutest “bum bandit” you ever did see
Honey Bear and I had a going-away gathering a couple nights before we moved across the country to Oregon, and there a friend introduced us to a spin on the game called Picture Down the Lane, which is Pictionary + Telephone. The gist:
- Everyone starts off with a pen and as many blank pieces of paper as there are players.
- Each person writes a message (the wordier, the better) on one of the papers, then passes it to the left.
- The person who receives the message then draws what he/she thinks the message is, stacks the drawing on top of the original message, then passes it to the left.
- Without looking at the original message, the person looks at the drawing and then writes his/her interpretation on a blank piece of paper, putting that page on top of the stack, then again it got to the left…
- …And so on and on, alternating between drawing and writing, until all players once again have their original message and the stack of papers traveling with it.
- Everyone takes turns reading off the original message and written interpretations as well as showing off the drawings. (Here is a different but closely related version of the rules.)
And now I share the text and images from our game with you, dear reader! As you’ll see, most start off innocently enough—then quickly plunge to depraved depths. Nevertheless, let this inspire your own game of Picture Down the Lane! (Bonus: Can you find the HappiMess-esque drawings?)
